YGRC aim's to empower girls' voices for healing, growth & change.

We offer a week-long summer camp for girls ages 8-17, We Rock! Dawson City, for those who self-identify as women/gender non-conforming, an instrument library, and year-round drop-in music programs for youth all genders.

YGRC is an initiative of the Dawson City Music Festival. DCMF has run it’s flagship festival since 1979, and over the years has noticed a consistent lack of female representation across all genres, particularly in rock music. We’d like to be the change – starting right here at home.

We want to see more women on stage. We want to see more young girls being loud and confident and rocking out. We want to see more northern youth taking up space in Canada’s music scene. We want to spark new friendships and support the Yukon’s next generation of musicians.

Why Are We Doing It?

DCMF is seeing a trend, and we want to do something about it.

As rock & roll and the music industry in general are largely male-dominated, the Dawson City Music Festival Association feels that it is important to offer an opportunity for young girls to get involved in music in a supportive and creative environment.

Our namesake festival hosts bands and musicians from across the world and has noticed a consistent lack of female representation across all genres, particularly in rock music. Following our grassroots history, we’d like to be the change we want to see starting right here at home.

We want to see more women on stage, booking shows, and touring. We want to see more young girls being loud and confident and rocking out. We want to see more youth from communities taking up space in the Yukon’s music scene. We want to see spark new friendships and support the territory’s next generation of musicians in every way we can.

Who knows, these young gals could end up headlining the Dawson City Music Festival many years down the road and we would be absolutely thrilled to help make that happen.

Who Are We?
