Yukon Girls Rock Camp is a 6 day summer camp that aims to amplify girls’ and gender non-conforming youths’ voices through rock music for healing, growth and change. Campers learn an instrument, form a band, write a song and rock out on main stage at the prestigious Dawson City Music Festival.
In addition to music and band practices campers will talk about growing up in the North, gender issues, media literacy, and positive self-expression. They’ll also learn how to make their world an awesome place to live through community activism.
We are part of the Girls Rock Camp Alliance, a world-wide movement of over 200 camps. We want to help campers develop the confidence to try something new, form friendships and provide positive female and gender non-conforming role models to create safe spaces for girls* to be themselves.
The 3rd annual Yukon Girls Rock Camp is July 17-22, 2017 in Dawson City, Yukon. Check out this mini-doc, courtesy of CBC Arts, and get a glimpse into Yukon Girls Rock Camp!
The Dawson City Music Festival would like to thank the Crime Prevention Victim Services Fund, Community Development Fund, the Arts Fund, Lotteries Yukon, the Youth Investment Fund, Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in, the Dawson City Women’s Shelter, the North Klondyke Music Society, the City of Dawson, and the countless amazing individuals who have helped this project come to life.
Why Are We Doing It?
DCMF is seeing a trend, and we want to do something about it.
As rock & roll and the music industry in general are largely male-dominated, the Dawson City Music Festival Association feels that it is important to offer an opportunity for young girls to get involved in music in a supportive and creative environment.
Our namesake festival hosts bands and musicians from across the world and has noticed a consistent lack of female representation across all genres, particularly in rock music. Following our grassroots history, we’d like to be the change we want to see starting right here at home.
We want to see more women on stage, booking shows, and touring. We want to see more young girls being loud and confident and rocking out. We want to see more youth from communities taking up space in the Yukon’s music scene. We want to see spark new friendships and support the territory’s next generation of musicians in every way we can.
Who knows, these young gals could end up headlining the Dawson City Music Festival many years down the road and we would be absolutely thrilled to help make that happen.
Who Are We?
The Dawson City Music Festival Association was incorporated as a non-profit organization in 1980 and has been providing the Klondike area (Dawson City, Yukon, Canada) with musical performances, workshops, and opportunities for over 30 years. Aside from our namesake festival, DCMF runs an annual songwriter-in-residence program and coordinates year-round concerts with performers from across the world.
