So What Is "Yukon Girls Rock Camp" All About?

Girls Rock Camps help girls build self-esteem and find their voices through unique programming that combines music education and performance, empowerment and social justice workshops, positive role models, and collaboration and leadership skill building.” – Girls Rock Camp Alliance

The Dawson City Music Festival is proud to announce an expansion in programming to include a year-round initiative born in January 2015, the Yukon Girls Rock Camp, which hosts events throughout the winter leading up to a week-long summer camp for girls across the Yukon Territory ages 8 – 18.

Yukon Girls Rock Camp strives to build confidence and self-esteem in pre-teen and teen girls through music education. During the week of camp, girls with little or no musical experience learn guitar, bass, keyboard, or drums under the guidance of awesome talented ladies from across Canada. Campers form bands and work together to create a finished musical piece to be performed live on the Mainstage of the Dawson City Music Festival.

The curriculum is based off of numerous successful camps in Canada and the USA, however it is tailored to suit the needs and interests of Yukon girls living in northern rural and remote communities, incorporating an educational day trip, hike, and song-writing workshop at Tombstone Territorial Park, on top of numerous other music-related workshops such as Putting the “Amp” in Camp (Tech 101), Small Town Event Planning, How to Curb Stage Fright, etc). Non-musical workshops include Zine and Button-Making, Screenprinting, Poster Design, Women in Media, Body Positivity, etc).

The Dawson City Music Festival would like to thank the Arts Fund, Lotteries Yukon, the Youth Investment Fund, the Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in Youth Centre, the Dawson City Women’s Shelter, the North Klondyke Music Society, the City of Dawson, and the countless amazing individuals who have helped this project come to life.

The 2017 Yukon Girls Rock Camp will take place in July in Dawson City, Yukon.

If you have any questions about the program, please contact camp coordinator Lana Welchman at girlsrock@dcmf.com.

Why Are We Doing It?

DCMF is seeing a trend, and we want to do something about it.

As rock & roll and the music industry in general are largely male-dominated, the Dawson City Music Festival Association feels that it is important to offer an opportunity for young girls to get involved in music in a supportive and creative environment.

Our namesake festival hosts bands and musicians from across the world and has noticed a consistent lack of female representation across all genres, particularly in rock music. Following our grassroots history, we’d like to be the change we want to see starting right here at home.

We want to see more women on stage, booking shows, and touring. We want to see more young girls being loud and confident and rocking out. We want to see more youth from communities taking up space in the Yukon’s music scene. We want to see spark new friendships and support the territory’s next generation of musicians in every way we can.

Who knows, these young gals could end up headlining the Dawson City Music Festival many years down the road and we would be absolutely thrilled to help make that happen.

Who Are We?
